Fact or Fiction?

I’ve heard it said that you can’t consider yourself a ‘real reader’ unless your reading habits combine non-fiction and fiction. Instead of spending all your reading time in ‘made-up worlds’ populated by invented characters, you should also get yourself immersed in hard facts. Fiction is fine for a bit of light entertainment, according to this view, but knowledge can only be gained from non-fiction. It’s there that real history can be found, real insights into the human mind and behaviour. The stories told in non-fiction books have a tremendous advantage over those in fiction: they’re true, those things actually happened.[/one_half]

The Quality of Fiction

There is often debate about the quality of fiction at any given time, with critics frequently pointing to a decline and bemoaning the pre-eminence of ‘popular fiction’ over ‘serious fiction’, sometimes called ‘literary fiction’. Certainly, the bestseller list often indicates public taste for the kind of fiction that requires no effort on the part of the reader, is poorly written and could justifiably be dismissed as ‘trash’. But anyone who cares to can always find plenty of the best kind of fiction, the fiction that teaches you about life and people, makes you think, and engages you in a fascinating and wholly believable other world.[/one_half_last]
